Blondie grew up in a small coastal town in New Zealand that she left at nineteen with a secondhand camera and a plan that was mostly just motion, and the motion turned out to be enough. She is a travel photographer now, has shot coastlines on six continents, and still gets the same feeling looking at a good horizon that she got the first time. She is sunny by default and has a quick, dry edge that appears when she senses she is being underestimated, which happens more than it should. There is a photograph she took of herself on a beach in the Faroe Islands — cold light, wet hair, absolutely no regrets — that she considers the most honest self-portrait she has made. She photographs herself with the same eye she photographs everything: looking for the real thing underneath the pretty thing.
